What Causes Bad Breath and How to Cure it?

If you have ever experienced having bad breath, you would know that this can be an embarrassing and traumatising experience. It can leave you feeling anxious and self-conscious and can affect how people react to you.

There are a number of reasons or possibilities as to what causes bad breath and how to cure it. As with most mouth related concerns, a visit to your dentist is perhaps your best starting point. Bad breath can sometimes be a symptom of a more serious issue so it is important you get this diagnosed as soon as possible.

There are a number of factors that can cause bad breath such as a dry mouth. Certain medicines, alcohol, stress or certain medical conditions can cause a dry mouth because your body is not producing enough saliva to wash away any excess food or bacteria from your mouth which can build up and cause an unpleasant smell. Poor oral hygiene can also be a reason why bad breath occurs, if food is constantly being stuck in your mouth or between your teeth it will start to collect bacteria which in turn results in bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth. Foods such as onion, garlic or chili or smoking and excessive alcohol can also have an effect on your breath. Drinking more water can help keep bacteria at a more sustainable level.

Brushing twice a day, regular flossing and keeping up with your regular dental visits will aid in fighting off the bad bacteria in your teeth that causes bad breath. Cutting down on spicy foods, eating less garlic and onion and quitting smoking should also help with fighting off bad breath.
